There’s a lot of crap housing and semi-crap housing that could be refreshed without building (at great environmental cost) brand new housing. Just think of our fading seaside towns. Huge scope for regeneration and levelling up. Not a complete solution but surely a start.

The problem is that without economic regeneration (ie jobs) those homes will fade again, because you're not solving the underlying problems that is causing those towns to fade. I think a better solution would be to tackle crappy & low-density housing in areas of high demand, primarily London & the SE but also cities, and build out on a Danish Fingerplan along transport routes.

Maybe both solutions, given the need? We could do more to shift industry and business to places with good architecture, space and lower costs. There is though a lot of crap development around the edges of London that would take medium density development - especially with some good infrastructure and a bit of landscaping and ingenuity - it’s not impossible, but we also lack the ambition and willpower to - easier to patch things up half-heartedly and find some fields to build on further out.
